You are precious! You are loved! You are not alone!

Yesterday, 10th October, was World Mental Health Day. This Day was first observed in 1992 as the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health with the objective of educating people about the importance of Mental Health. The aim was to highlight the support and mental healthcare available for people and to advocate against the social stigma. This day is observed globally to make people feel hopeful by empowering them and to encourage them to take a step forward to make a change.

Statistics shows that close to 800 000 people die due to suicide which is

1 person every 40 seconds. It is the second leading cause of death among people aged between 15 to 29 year olds globally which is alarming!

Here in Singapore, there are several initiatives that have been started including the peer support programme in all schools so that peers will be equipped with skills to help each other and provide support. A recent article by Anthea Ong who is a Nominated Member of Parliament, emphasised the importance of making mental health education mandatory in all schools in Singapore. The article also mentions other educational systems that have made mental health education mandatory.

The rising rates of deaths caused by suicide proves that it is a necessity to educate the public especially young people about the importance of their

psychological well-being.

So, how do we observe and respond sensitively when we notice signs?

The truth is sometimes we do but oftentimes, we don’t. However, if we stay vigilant and observant, very often, we will notice signs. It is vital not to wait but take the first step to speak to the person and find out what you can do to help.

Moreover, the first person to know that you need help with your mental health is always YOU. As much as we care for our body, our mind needs the equal amount of care or even more. Very often, we tend to neglect our mental health or hesitate to seek assistance because of the stigma surrounding it. However, it is key to know, understand and educate others that IT IS OKAY, NOT TO FEEL OKAY.

All of us have a warrior inside us that is willing to fight the battle! Break the barriers of social stigma and make a change! Remember that just like physical health, mental health is crucial at every stage in life!
